Phoenix canariensis

Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis)
Scientific name
Phoenix canariensis
Family
Arecaceae
Origin
Canary Islands
Status
Weed / invasive

The classic 'pineapple' palm, single-trunked with a huge, even round canopy, reaching 20 metres or more. Its fronds carry long, sharp spines at the base that cause painful, sometimes serious injuries, so removal and pruning is a job for an arborist. Susceptible to fatal Fusarium wilt, which spreads on cutting tools. Technically invasive but widely planted.

Should it stay?

This one is classed as a weed or invasive species in South East Queensland. If it is on your property it is often worth removing and replacing with a suitable native. We handle the removal, the stump, and can advise on what to plant in its place.
