Can you actually remove that tree? Brisbane and Ipswich rules

A lot of tree removals need council approval before any work starts, and getting it wrong is expensive. Here is how the rules work in Brisbane and Ipswich.

One of the most common calls we get starts with someone assuming they can do whatever they like with a tree on their own property. Sometimes that is true. Often it is not, and finding out after the tree is on the ground is an expensive way to learn.

Protected trees are more common than people think

Both Brisbane City Council and Ipswich City Council protect certain trees and vegetation. Protection can come from the tree's size, its species, a vegetation protection order, an overlay on the property, or the tree being part of a development condition. You cannot always tell by looking, which is the trap.

Removing protected vegetation without approval may result in enforcement action. Check the requirements with the relevant council before work begins.

When you need approval, and what it takes

When a removal or significant pruning does need council approval, there is usually a form to lodge, and sometimes the council will want a report from a consulting arborist setting out the condition of the tree and the reason for the work. We will tell you when that is likely so you are not caught out.

We are a working tree crew, not a consultancy, so if a formal report is needed we will point you to the right person for it. Most everyday removals and pruning do not need one, and we can tell you quickly which side of the line your job sits on.

Check current council requirements

Confirm the rules for your property with Brisbane City Council or Ipswich City Council before work starts. Requirements vary by location and vegetation protection.

Before work begins

Before you remove or heavily prune a mature tree in Brisbane or Ipswich, ask whether it is protected. If you are not sure, ask us. Checking costs nothing. Removing a protected tree without approval can cost a great deal.
