Red Flowering Gum

Corymbia ficifolia

Red Flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia)
Scientific name
Corymbia ficifolia
Family
Myrtaceae
Origin
South coastal Western Australia
Status
Australian native

A much-loved ornamental staple with unique form and colour. Rarely tops 9 metres, so it is a smaller tree, but can spread over 5 metres with a thick, gnarled canopy. Famous for its brilliant scarlet to red-orange summer flowers with chartreuse centres, heavily scented and loved by pollinators. Well behaved around buildings and hardscaping, tolerant of urban life, and not destructive at the roots. Can be messy with nuts, nectar and shed leaves.

Living with it

This is an Australian native and usually worth keeping where it has the room. Good pruning to Australian Standard AS 4373 keeps it healthy and safe. If it has outgrown its spot, we can reduce, lift or remove it properly.
