Leopard Tree (Libidibia ferrea (formerly Caesalpinia ferrea))
Scientific name
Libidibia ferrea (formerly Caesalpinia ferrea)
Family
Fabaceae
Origin
Brazil and Bolivia, South America
Status
Ornamental / exotic

A large, semi-deciduous tree that can be pruned to suburban size. Prized for its ornamental flowers, autumn colour and its mottled, leopard-like bark, plus hardiness in drought and frost. Widely planted by Queensland councils, though its roots and size need managing near structures.
