Umbrella Tree

Schefflera actinophylla

Umbrella Tree (Schefflera actinophylla)
Scientific name
Schefflera actinophylla
Family
Araliaceae
Origin
Australia, New Guinea, Java (naturalised in SE QLD)
Status
Weed / invasive

An Australian native that turns into a nightmare in cultivation. Its aggressive roots lift paths, block drains and damage foundations, and it self-seeds freely into gardens and bushland. Knowing where (and whether) to plant it avoids most of the common problems. Frequently removed from suburban blocks.

Should it stay?

This one is classed as a weed or invasive species in South East Queensland. If it is on your property it is often worth removing and replacing with a suitable native. We handle the removal, the stump, and can advise on what to plant in its place.
